Entrevista con Alejandro Montes Santamaría, Fundador del Festival Internacional de Cine de Horror Aurora.
¿Qué es Aurora?
Es un festival de cine de terror, el objetivo es abrir una ventana tanto a las producciones nacionales de esa temática pero también rescatar películas temáticas del género, y conocer qué es lo que se está haciendo en otros países. El festival tiene 16 años, estoy preparando el 17 y más o menos desde la 4ta edición abrí una convocatoria de cortometraje, porque quería ver que es lo que se estaba haciendo a otros país a nivel corto.
¿De dónde viene el nombre?
Surgió porque con una amiga artista de aquí de Guanajuato, Vanessa Salas, estábamos pensando en el nombre, quería que tuviera personalidad, que no tuviera nada que ver con el terror. En la película de “Cronos” de Guillermo del Toro, el nombre en el guión era “Aurora y su abuelo el vampiro”, el personaje que se me hace más fuerte y tétrico de la película es la niña, nunca habla, es muy atroz en algunas cosas. Es un nombre sencillo, paralelo, le puedes poner una cara, etc.
¿Cómo es el proceso de la creación de un proyecto cultural?
Yo trabajo en la Universidad y tengo un ingreso fijo desde hace 16 años, eso me ha permitido en no pensar que un festival como Aurora, como capitalizable, hay un lucro indirecto, de prestigio, de impacto.
Hay que definir bien cuál es el objetivo, si es una empresa cultural hacia dónde va dirigida, si tiene intenciones económicamente redituables para que genere sueldos, ver desde el principio qué es lo que vas a abordar, el alcance que puedas tener en aspectos del ambiente, en Guanajuato puedo hacer un evento en La Presa y otro en la casa de la Tía Aura, se puede hacer caminando.
En la 4ta edición ¿Cómo hiciste para poder lanzar la convocatoria a nivel internacional?
La convocatoria traducida a Alemán, Francés, Portugués, Inglés y Español, no la puse en Japonés o alguna otra lengua porque se iba a dar por hecho que hablábamos ese idioma y no íbamos a poder comunicarnos sin recurrir a Google.
Esa primera vez fue en un portal web de España que se llama “Aullidos” y ellos publicaron la convocatoria, yo esperaba 10 cortos y llegaron 50.
Desde la 2da o 3ra edición del Festival, Ernesto Herrera, uno de los pilares de “Expresión en Corto” que ahora es el GIFF, me ayudó mucho, me permitió tener un stand de Aurora durante el evento, para que los directores o los asistentes supieran de viva voz de qué trataba el evento. Ahí conocí a una persona de una plataforma que se llama Movie Beta, me ofrece el servicio para que los directos me manden sus películas. A la fecha solo uso Movie Beta y Fest Home, y apenas me doy abasto.
¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de organizar el festival?
Ver las películas, seleccionar los cortos, cada año proyectamos 5 o 6 películas de la muestra, la parte fuerte es ver los cortos que son alrededor de 60 de esos, hacemos una curaduría entre Monse Alejandri, yo, Roberto Carlos Olguín y el equipo del Cine Club. Si llegan 600 cortos yo veo los 600 y de ahí selecciono cuáles van a ver los jurados, les doy un máximo de 15 cortos, de esos son los que me interesa que queden como ganadores. Todo el año veo ese género y lo consumo. Cada Festival tiene un tema pero veo una tendencia, un fenómeno colectivo, a nivel mundial cada año que se presentan en los cortos que mandan. El cine de terror es un género que se presta para denunciar.
¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien que quiere empezar un proyecto cultural?
Que sea de algo que te apasione, si no es algo de lo que te apasione y sepas y hagas todo por conocer sobre eso a pesar de tu sueldo, no te conviene. Es la única forma de que el trabajo no sea trabajo.
Aprender a respetar la opinión y los gustos de los demás, siempre y cuando estos no vulneren la integridad de otra persona o de un animal.
Respetemos todo tipo de expresión y que estés dispuesta a dar todo por lo que te gusta, eso es lo primero. Que esté súper comprometido con su proyecto.

Interview with Alejandro Montes Santamaría, Founder of the Aurora International Horror Film Festival.
What is Aurora?
It is a horror film festival, the objective is to open a window both to national productions of that theme but also to rescue thematic films of the genre, and to know what is being done in other countries. The festival is 16 years old, I am preparing the 17th and more or less since the 4th edition, I opened a call for short films because I wanted to see what was being done in other countries at the short film level.
Where does the name come from?
It came about because with an artist friend from here in Guanajuato, Vanessa Salas, we were thinking about the name, I wanted it to have a personality, that had nothing to do with horror. In the film "Cronos" by Guillermo del Toro, the name in the script was "Aurora and her grandfather the vampire", the character that is the strongest and most creepy in the film is the girl, she never speaks, she is very atrocious in some things. It's a simple name, parallel, you can put a face on it, etc.
How is the process of creating a cultural project?
I work at the university and I have had a fixed income for 16 years, which has allowed me not to think that a festival like Aurora, as capitalizable, there is an indirect profit, of prestige, of impact.
You have to define well what the objective is, if it is a cultural Enterprise, whats its direction?, if it has economically profitable intentions to generate salaries, see from the beginning what you are going to address, the scope you can have in aspects of the environment, in Guanajuato I can do an event in La Presa and another in the house of Tía Aura, it can be done by foot.
In the 4th edition, how did you manage to launch the announcement at an international level?
The announcement was translated into German, French, Portuguese, English, and Spanish, I didn't put it in Japanese or any other language because it would be assumed that we spoke that language and we wouldn't be able to communicate without resorting to Google.
That first time was in a web portal in Spain called "Aullidos" and they published the announcement, I expected 10 short films and 50 arrived.

What is your favorite part of organizing the festival?
Seeing the films, selecting the shorts, every year we screen 5 or 6 films from the exhibition, the most important part is to see the shorts, there are around 60 of them, we do a curatorship between Monse Alejandri, myself, Roberto Carlos Olguín and the Cine Club team. If 600 short films arrive, I watch the 600 and from there I select which ones the jury is going to watch, I give them a maximum of 15 short films, those are the ones I want to be the winners. All year long I watch that genre and I consume it. Each Festival has a theme but I see a trend, a collective phenomenon, worldwide every year that is presented in the short films that are sent. Horror cinema is a genre that lends itself to denounce.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a cultural project?
It has to be something you're passionate about, if it's not something you're passionate about and you know and do everything you can to learn about it despite your salary, it's not right for you. That's the only way for work not to be work.
Learn to respect the opinion and tastes of others, as long as they do not violate the integrity of another person or an animal.
Let's respect all types of expression and be willing to give everything for what you like, that's the first thing. That you are super committed to your project.
