Entrevista con Sofía Maass, coordinadora del taller “AMANO”.
¿Qué es AMANO?
Es un taller de cerámica que está organizado por entusiastas de la cerámica que son los gestores, profesionales de la cerámica que son los maestros y por su puesto la comunidad interesada en la cerámica que son los alumnos. Una de nuestras misiones es preservar estos saberes inmateriales, esto significa que las cosas que uno de nuestros maestros aprendió de su abuelo no se pierdan porque la siguiente generación no quiera replicarlo.
¿Cómo surgió la idea de empezar este taller?
Mi mamá estudió artes plásticas en Esmeralda y se fue a hacer una especialización en diseño gráfico, la invitaron en Guanajuato a hacer el logotipo de la campaña de Fox, la “X”, la “V” de Victoria y Vicente, estas cosas de marketing, se vino a vivir acá y daba clases en la UG, ejercía su profesión, en el 2010 le entró curiosidad por la cerámica y empezó a involucrarse más, la cosa se puso seria cuando llegó un horno al patio, yo no entendía mucho de su nueva afición, empezó a contratar a personas para trabajar en él, prueba y error. Yo estaba trabajando en un proyecto sostenible y había tomado un diplomado de construcción con tierra y me interesaron las artes, me di cuenta de que era un desperdicio tener un taller de cerámica funcional que estuviera dormido, fue cuestión de organizarnos entre las personas interesadas en la cerámica y restaurar el taller.
¿Quiénes pueden unirse y de qué manera lo pueden hacer?
Nuestro lema es “cerámica para todos”, todo el mundo puede unirse si lo quiere hacer, ofrecemos becas, lo que pedimos a cambio de las becas es que nos ayuden con los trabajos en el jardín, acomodar los ladrillos, o cualquier necesidad que pueda aparecer en el taller. Se puede unir quien quiera, y si no lo puede pagar, nosotros le damos la oportunidad para que se pueda unir, la cosa es que sea parejo, que el arte no sea solo para unos.
¿Cómo manejas un sueldo justo para los artesanos?
En mi vida profesional me ha tocado hacer de todo, desde ser asistente de derechos humanos en un organismo diplomático hasta ser cocinera y hacer panes, en todas estas experiencias me generaba mucha frustración ver que a los trabajadores de planta nos tocaba ganar muy poco y ver a nuestros jefes ganar muchísimo por hacer un cuarto del trabajo. “¿Qué es lo que a mí como trabajadora me gustaría?”, si una empresa no me puede ofrecer un contrato formal o un seguro, por lo menos me gustaría que me ofrecieran un salario decente. El salario mínimo es de $173 al día y yo quería que fuera $173 la hora, luego hice la planeación en contabilidad y vi que era posible pagarles esa cantidad la hora, el plan a largo plazo es pagarles más, ganan más lo maestros porque ellos son los que hacen el trabajo rudo.
¿Qué te gustaría ver en el futuro para el taller?
En este diplomado de bioconstrucción en Oaxaca, está Francisco Toledo que tiene esta escuela que se llama “Centro de las Artes de San Agustín y es una escuela increíble, me fui con beca total, dan programas muy completos a precio nulo y lo único que hay que hacer es aplicar y demostrar que tenemos interés, para nosotros, lo queremos ver como un centro de las artes en La Presa, sabemos que se necesitan muchos años para convertirnos en una institución de ese calibre pero se empieza con lo que tenemos a la mano.
¿Dónde podemos ver los resultados de los alumnos?
En nuestras redes sociales, y vamos a abrir un showroom en el taller, estamos ya en los trabajos de diseño de eso, vamos a hacer colaboración con diferentes lugares, por lo pronto si quieren comprar regalos de navidad o año nuevo, en el taller van a poder encontrar.

What is AMANO?
It is a ceramic workshop that is organized by ceramic enthusiasts who are the managers, ceramic professionals who are the teachers and of course the community interested in ceramics who are the students. One of our missions is to preserve this immaterial knowledge, this means that the things that one of our teachers learned from his grandfather are not lost because the next generation does not want to replicate it.
How did the idea of starting this workshop come up?
My mom studied plastic arts in Esmeralda and went to do a specialization in graphic design, she was invited in Guanajuato to make the logo for Fox's campaign, the "X", the "V" for Victory and Vicente, these marketing things, she came to live here and taught at the UG, In 2010 he became curious about ceramics and started to get more involved, things got serious when a kiln arrived to the patio, I didn't understand much about his new hobby, he started to hire people to work on it, trial and error. I was working on a sustainable project and had taken a diploma in earthen construction and became interested in the arts, I realized that it was a waste to have a functional pottery workshop that was dormant, it was a matter of organizing ourselves among people interested in ceramics and restoring the workshop.
Who can join and how can they join?
Our motto is "ceramics for everyone", everyone can join if they want to, we offer scholarships, what we ask in exchange for the scholarships is that they help us with the work in the garden, to arrange the bricks, or any need that may arise in the workshop. Anyone who wants to can join, and if they can't afford it, we give them the opportunity to join, the thing is that it is even, that art is not only for some.
How do you manage a fair salary for the artisans?
In my professional life I have had to do everything, from being a human rights assistant in a diplomatic organization to being a cook and baking bread, in all these experiences I was very frustrated to see that we workers had to earn very little and see our bosses earn a lot for doing a quarter of the work. "If a company can't offer me a formal contract or insurance, I would at least like to be offered a decent wage. The minimum wage is $173 a day and I wanted it to be $173 an hour, then I did the planning in accounting and saw that it was possible to pay them that much an hour, the long term plan is to pay them more, the teachers earn more because they are the ones doing the hard work.
What would you like to see in the future for the workshop?
In this bio-construction diploma in Oaxaca, there is Francisco Toledo who has this school called "Centro de las Artes de San Agustín and it is an incredible school, I left with a full scholarship, they give very complete programs at zero price and the only thing we have to do is apply and show that we have interest, for us, we want to see it as a center for the arts in La Presa, we know that it takes many years to become an institution of that caliber but we start with what we have at hand.
